What's Going On? April 6th through April 9th

  Thought for the Week

Unit 10: Area and Perimeter

This week, we will start our tenth unit of study on area and perimeter.  This week, we will focus on how to calculate the area and perimeter of parallelograms, triangles, rhombuses, kites, trapezoids, and regular polygons.  We will also learn how to solve for missing measurements in figures based on properties of area and perimeter.

Wrapping Up Unit 9: Circles

This week, we will be wrapping up our ninth unit on circles.  We will spend Monday's class talking about how to solve for the measures of segments formed by chords, secants, and tangents.  We will spend Tuesday's class talking about how to construct tangents.  For this activity, students will need to have a compass and a ruler.  Our summative assessment will take place during class on Friday.  Any students who will not be in class on Friday due to spring break plans are strongly encouraged to take the summative before spring break!

What's Going On? March 15th through March 19th

  Thought for the Week

Unit 9: Circles

This week, we will continue with our study of circles.  Students will learn about how to solve for measures within circles based on properties of chords, arcs, and inscribed angles.  Students will have a formative assessment check-in during class on Wednesday to make sure that we are on the right track for the unit.  We will finish the week by investigating angles formed by chords, secants, and tangents and how to solve for measurements.

What's Going On? March 8th through March 12th

 Thought for the Week

Modified Schedule for the Week

Our sophomores and juniors will take the ACT on Tuesday, March 9th.  Because of this, we will run a modified schedule.  Monday will be a "Tuesday-style" schedule.  On Tuesday, only sophomores and juniors will report to school.  Freshmen and Seniors will have the day off.  The rest of the week, will run as normal.

Wrapping Up Unit 8 and Beginning Unit 9

On Monday, students will take our summative assessment on our triangles unit.  On this assessment, students will be asked to solve for missing measurements in right triangles and non-right triangles.  The items in our tool kit that students could use to solve these problems include:

Right Triangle Tools:
  • Pythagorean Theorem
  • Special Right Triangle Patterns
    • Isosceles Right Triangle
    • 30-60-90 Triangle
  • Trigonometry: SOH CAH TOA
Non-Right Triangle Tools:
  • Law of Sines
  • Law of Cosines

On Wednesday, we will dive into unit 9.  In this unit, students will discover circle properties.  We will start by talking about circle-specific vocabulary and we will learn how to write the equation for a circle.  We will also talk about how we can solve for measurements in a circle using tangent properties.

What's Going On? March 1st through March 5th

Thought for the Week

Unit 8: Trigonometry

Our primary focus for the week will be on solving for angle and side length measurements in non-right triangles.  Students will use the Law of Sines and the Law of Cosines when dealing with non-right triangles.  We will end the week by reviewing our unit in preparation for Monday's summative assessment.

What's Going On? February 22nd through February 25th

Thought for the Week

Modified Schedule This Week

This week, students will have a shortened day on Thursday and no school on Friday.  Because of this, the rest of the week will see a modified schedule.  This means that Monday will be a "Tuesday-style" schedule, Tuesday will be a "Wednesday-style" schedule, Wednesday will be a "Thursday-style" schedule and Thursday will be a shortened "Friday-style" schedule.

Unit 8: Trigonometry

This week, we will continue with our study of trigonometry.  We will start off the week by using our SOH CAH TOA trig ratios to solve for missing angle measurements in right triangles.  Then we will use our trig ratios to solve application problems (aka word problems).  We will end the week by addressing non-right triangles and the Law of Sines.

Conferences this Wednesday

I still have a few open spots available for conferences this Wednesday.  Conferences will take place via our video conferencing software, WebEx.  If you would be interested in scheduling a conference, please sign up for one of the available time spots.

Unit 8: Trigonometry

This week, we will dive into our eighth unit of the year.  We will start off the week by investigating the Pythagorean Theorem and how to solve for missing measurements in special right triangles.  Students should expect to see a quick formative during class on Wednesday so we can check in on our progress and make sure that we are starting the unit on the right foot.  We will end the week by investigating right triangle trigonometry ratios (SOH CAH TOA) and how we can use them to solve for side length measurements in right triangles.

As a reminder, students are welcome to join me in room 300, or via WebEx, for extra help during our JIT sessions that take place at 11:35 at the end of our lunch period.
