Finishing Unit 11: Surface Area and Volume


This week Honors Geometry students will be working to complete unit 11 on Surface Area and Volume.  As we have talked about in class, students who complete our unit 11 summative review assignment will be permitted to create and use a formula reference sheet to use during the test.  You can find a list of the formulas that we discussed during the unit here.

During the test, we will address two different learning targets: surface area and volume.  In the surface area section, students should expect to calculate the surface area and lateral area of a prism, cylinder, pyramid, cone and sphere.  Students should also expect to apply their knowledge of surface area to a real-world problem, such as trying to determine the cost of painting a room.

In the volume section of the test, students should expect to calculate the volume of a prism, cylinder, pyramid, cone and sphere. Students should also expect to solve for missing measurements of a solid given the volume.

ACT Aspire Testing for Freshmen

This week on Tuesday and Wednesday freshmen will participate in ACT Aspire testing.  (Please note that there is NOT SCHOOL on Monday.)  Students who are in class on these days will use this time to review Surface Area and Volume concepts to make sure that we are ready to finish our volume unit strong.

Volume of Prisms, Pyramids, Cylinders, Cones and Spheres

After we finish the ACT Aspire testing, we will continue our study of unit 11 where we investigate the volume of solids, including prisms, pyramids, cylinders, cones, and spheres.  We have a lot of formulas in this unit, so students may earn the privilege to use a formula sheet on our unit summative assessment by completing our summative review before we take the summative.

ACT Benchmark Assessment

Students will start off the week by completing the third ACT benchmark assessment.  We have been charting our progress throughout the year and we have been focusing in on different types of ACT questions, including spending quite a bit of time talking about how to come up with an "exact" answer, rather than a decimal approximation.  Students have shown growth throughout the year, moving toward the "college and career readiness" standard.  This assessment will give students one more chance to show progress, as well as give some practice leading into the "Forward Exam".

Unit 11: Surface Area and Volume

After the ACT benchmark assessment, we will continue on with our study of unit 11 on surface area and volume.  Last week we talked about how to find the surface area of prisms and cylinders.  This week we will talk about how to find the surface area of pyramids and cones.  Students will also work on a one day group project where they will have the opportunity to create packaging for a product.  Students will analyze different types of packaging and will apply their knowledge of surface to determine the best packaging for their product.  We will finish up the week by talking about how to find the volume of prisms and cylinders.  As we have been doing with our last few units, students will continue to take formative assessments on a regular basis in order to give feedback on learning objectives throughout the unit.

Finishing Up Unit 10: Area

This week we will finish up our 10th unit on Area.  We will spend Monday's class reviewing for our summative assessment.  On our second day of class for the week, freshmen will participate in our third and final math MAP test for the year.  Provided that students score at or above our "238" benchmark, this will be the final math MAP test during high school.  On our third day of class for the week, students will have the opportunity to ask last minute questions, finish up our "Trading Spaces" program, or finish up the MAP test.  On our last day of class for the week, students will complete the unit 10 summative assessment and turn in the "Trading Spaces" project.

Please note that the "Trading Spaces" project is a summative assessment so it MUST be completed in order to receive a grade for the course.  Students can have individual tasks "checked off" as they are completed to ensure that the project is going well.  Tasks may be checked off through the end of our third day of  class for the week.

Unit 10: Area


During this short week before spring break, we will be starting our tenth unit on Area.  This week we will talk about how to calculate the area of traditional figures such as triangles, parallelograms, trapezoids, rhombuses and kites.  Once we understand the traditional area formulas, we will determine different methods to calculate the area of irregular figures.  Additionally, we will talk about how to solve for missing measurements when given the area of a figure.



"Trading Spaces" Project

This week we will also begin our "Trading Spaces" project.  This project allows students to apply our knowledge of Area to real-life home remodeling projects.  Students will look at floor plans of a house in order to determine the size of different spaces.  Students will then be able to calculate various items such as how much it will cost to change the flooring in the kitchen, how much it will cost to paint a bedroom, and how much it will cost to landscape the yard.  Students will be working on this project throughout the unit and it will be due on the same day as our summative assessment.  As we are working on the project, students will have their tasks checked off each day to make sure that they are on the right track.

What's Going On? March 14th through March 17th

Happy Pi Day!


Monday is Pi Day (3.14) and the school will be participating in some pi day activities.  During AE, classes will compete to answer as many questions as they can related to pi.  The AE class with the most correct answers will with a PIE DAY!

On Monday, we will also be announcing the winner of the "PIE YOUR TEACHER IN THE FACE" contest.  Winners will be announced on Monday and will pie their teacher in the face during their lunch period.

Thank you to all of the students who purchased a raffle ticket.  All proceeds will be donated to North's Sparky Fund.

Wrapping Up Our Circles Unit

This week we will be wrapping up our ninth unit of the year on circles.  We will start the week talking about the lengths of segments formed by secants and tangents meeting at a point outside of the circle.  We will then talk about how to construct a tangent to a circle, so please bring your compass and straight edge to class!  Once this is complete, we will take a look at the review assignment and take the summative assessment on the last day of class for the week.  

Unit 8 Trigonometry Summative Retakes

Students who are interested in completing a retake for unit 8 have until Wednesday (for 1st period) or Thursday (for 2nd and 4th periods).  All formative assignments (homework and quizzes), test corrections, and extra practice must be completed before the retake can be taken.  Please see me to arrange a time if you need to complete a retake.

What's Going On? March 7-11th

Circles

This week we will continue our study of our circles unit.  At the end of last week, we defined some of the basic vocabulary terms associated with circles and practiced writing equations for circles in the coordinate plane.  This week we will take a closer look at chord properties, tangent properties, inscribed angles and angles formed by chords, secants and tangents.  Be prepared to complete some formatives this week, including a more formal formative on our third day of class for the week.

Summative Retakes for Unit 8: Triangles and Trigonometry

Students who are interested in retaking one or both sections of our unit 8 summative on triangles and trigonometry will need to make sure all assignments for the unit are complete, make corrections on the original assessment, complete extra practice, and take the retake on the day BEFORE our unit 9 summative assessment on circles.  Please see me if you have any questions.
