Unit 10: Area

This week we will continue our study of area.  We will learn about the area formulas associated with the following shapes:

• Trapezoids
• Kites
• Rhombuses
• Regular Polygons
• Area of a Circle
• Area of a Sector of a Circle
• Area of a Segment of a Circle

Additionally, we will talk about the lengths associated with the outside edge of a circle:

• Circumference
• Arc Length

In addition to our more traditional method of studying a unit, students will also complete a summative project where they get to create a "Dream Home".  Students will use the website floorplanner.com to design a one-story, two bedroom home.  Based on the dimensions of each of the rooms in the home, students will calculate the cost of some basic home remodeling projects such as replacing the flooring for a room, painting the walls, and painting the exterior of the home.  Students will also work on calculating the cost of some landscaping projects.

This will be a quick unit and students will be finishing the summative Dream Home project and completing the traditional paper-and-pencil summative assessment prior to leaving for Spring Break.
